According to a report on the airway1 website on May 16th, due to economic sanctions, Russia’s Irkut’s new jetliner MC-21 is replacing Western suppliers with domestic suppliers. The company has just received it from Russia’s AeroComposite company. The right wing of the first composite aircraft with a length of 17.5 meters will be attached to the fuselage produced by the same company.
AeroComposite is headquartered in Ulyanovsk and is one of the suppliers to replace Western companies in the MC-21 passenger aircraft program. These parts were originally supposed to be produced by Hexcel and Toray, but due to Western sanctions on Russia, the two companies suspended related work in 2018.
The wing kit is manufactured using Russian patented technology. The use of composite materials enables the MC-21 wing to have an aspect ratio of up to 11.5, which is higher than that of an old jet wing of the same size.
According to Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov (Denis Manturov), the MC-21-300 passenger aircraft receiving the new wings will still fly in 2021 and will be delivered to undisclosed customers.
