Carbon fiber is an advanced structural material that is currently used in many fields including rc car,drone uav, sport, medical facility,decoration. It has the advantages of light weight, high strength, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Carbon fiber sheet is a basic carbon fiber product, and most of the processed parts are also cutting based on carbon fiber sheet. On the above, the common processing technology is drilling holes. In this article, lets see how is the difficulties of making holes in carbon fiber board.

 

In the production process, in order to ensure the machining efficiency, a higher tool speed is usually used during the hole drilling process. Carbon fiber is a high-hardness and wear-resistant material. The wear effect to the tool is severe. Also the high temperature in the working area will cause the tools wear out.. Some resins with poor heat resistance are likely to soften or even burn under  heat produced by  high speed high temperature  cutting. The high temperature reduces the bonding strength of the resin and the interface between the fiber layers is debonded, which is easy to cause damage such as burrs, delamination, and tearing.

Carbon fiber sheet is made by laminating carbon fiber prepregs in different laying directions. It has significant anisotropy. Some properties of the longitudinal and transverse materials are quite different. It finally caused unevenly changed during drilling,and the holes become not circle, but elliptical. And the sharply changes in temperature during processing may cause tapered holes to be formed during the processing of thick carbon  fiber sheet. For cutting tools, if the rigidity of tiny drill bits is poor, it will easy to break under the action of cutting and machine tool vibration.
